awareness and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in young

athletes in Freddy’s memory.

SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST (SCA)

Along with the Freddy Espinal Memorial Scholarship, we are committed to raising awareness about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in student-athletes and how important a 5 min EKG is and should be a requirement before playing a sport —a cause that has become deeply personal to our family.

Freddy was a vibrant, talented athlete who poured his heart into everything he did, both on and off the field. His unexpected passing reminds us how crucial it is to understand and address the risks of SCA, even in young, healthy individuals.

We honor Freddy’s memory by working to protect the hearts of other young athletes and ensure that no family endures the same heartbreak.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating properly due to an undetected heart condition. It strikes people of all ages who may seem to be healthy, even children and teens. SCA leads to death in minutes if the person does not get help right away.

When SCA happens, the person collapses and doesn't respond or breathe normally. They may gasp or shake as if having a seizure.

Immediate recognition and quick action—such as calling 911, starting CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED)—can make the difference between life and death. By promoting education, heart screenings, and emergency preparedness in our schools and sports communities, we hope to help prevent future tragedies, protect the hearts of young athletes and make a EKG a requirment before playing a sport, so another family doesnt have to go through the pain we feel everyday.
